• Michael Schumacher has now signed a contract to return to formula one next year with Mercedes, according to multiple authoritative sources.

Germany's Bild newspaper and the BBC in Britain say the seven time world champion, who turns 41 in early January, has signed a one-year deal.

Bild, valuing the contract at 7 million euros, said the German's decision is the "biggest comeback in sports history". Schumacher reportedly signed the deal at Brackley, with an announcement to be made on Tuesday.

His spokeswoman Sabine Kehm would not comment, but Schumacher's friend Sebastian Vettel said he was happy to hear the news.

"This is his own decision for his own reasons but it makes me happy that he is going to be there. I hope he is still fit enough for his age to ride along with us," the Red Bull driver is quoted as saying by RTL Nachtmagazin.

Bild said Mercedes is seeking special permission so that Schumacher can test the Brawn car in January.

At the 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicles Show which commences later this week, Volkswagen will unveil their Pickup Concept and building up to the event we can now bring you the first details and images of the model. It previews the full production model currently in development which we believe will carry the label Robust or possibly Taro. We have seen prototypes on a number of occasions but temporary body panels have withheld the final styling, this production looking concept gives us reason to believe the final model's styling will not veer far from what we see before us.

The Pickup Concept follows a beach patrol theme with its blue LED lights fitted on the roof of the vehicle and you can barely fail to see the SAR (search and rescue) stickers plastered on the side of its body. It boasts a five-foot cargo area along with a two piece tailgate that cleverly stores essential tools for the day to day operations of a beach patrol vehicle. It features a double-cab layout with a center console that has a multifunction touchscreen that controls the radio-navigation system

Volkswagen will begin production of the 1 ton truck in the fall of 2009 at its plant in Pachero Argentina with sales to begin soon after in the models key markets: South America, South Africa, Australia and Europe. There are no confirmations on when or if the pickup will make it to US shores, but surely that can't be too far round the corner.

Next year the Dakar Rally will be held in the wide open spaces of South America and Mitsubishi has no plans to let the historic change of venue pass them by. The Japanese automaker has announced the development of the Racing Lancer which will compete in the 2009 event.

The Super Production Cross-Country Rally car has been developed to abide with official FIA racing regulations and abides with new rules set to come into force in 2010. It features a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged diesel engine which Mitsubishi began development of during the qualifying rounds of the 2008 Dakar Series and the 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup. Power stands at 260hp and an impressive 650Nm (480 lb ft) of torque which is passed to the wheels via it's permanent four-wheel drive with limited slip central differential. The carbon fibre bodywork is reminiscent of the Lancer Sportback which will be released in Europe this summer.

It's participation in the Dakar Rally is seen as a platform to enhance sales of the Pajero and Montero and will also help stimulate development of future powertrains and 4WD transmission systems.

Kahn Design owner Afzal Kahn whom you may remember has little too much money to burn is hell bent on putting the Brits back to the forefront of the automotive industry. He recently announced their collaboration with engine tuning firm Cosworth which will combine the design strengths of Kahn with the engineering of Cosworth to create “truly sensational” automobiles. The first project of the partnership was originally announced with a teaser image which did little to sensationalize the potential of the partnership, but now the full details and images have been released we see ourselves slowly warming up to the idea.

The aggressive styling package featuring a road hugging body kit with a low riding front spoiler, flared arches and a large rear spoiler capped off with 22 inch lightweight alloy wheels. The interior gets a custom made perforated leather upholstery.

Cosworth got to work on the TDV8 engine from the Range Rover Sport bumping power output up to 300bhp from 268bhp which now enables the model to accelerate from 0-62mph in under 8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 135mph.

Pricing is yet to be officially announce but it is expected to cost around £75,000 – a £20,000 premium over the regular Range Rover Sport model.

When we are looking for the latest designs of upcoming models, the EU Tradmark Office is hardly going to be our first port of call. But in the case of the 2010 Mazda3, we can tell you this has certainly been the case. The hackers over at Carscoop have managed to obtain a couple of documents (see additonal photos to the right) which seem to trademark the designs of the next generation Mazda3 model in all 27 countries of the EU.

We can't rule out the possibility that these drawings of the hatchback version of the Mazda3 could be fake, comparisons between these images and the camoflaged Mazda3 prototypes caught by our spies certainly show design similarities on the front end. Prototypes spotted so far have been solely in the sedan body style, making rear end comparisons too difficult to categorically confirm or deny.

We expect to see the sedan variant unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show this November, with the hatchback set to follow a couple of months later in Detroit.

Take that Nissan and General Motors, you thought you had the Nurburgring record in the bag, but you didn't see this one coming. The Dodge Viper ACR has lapped the famous circuit in just 7 minutes 22.1 seconds, slicing more than 4 seconds off the time of the Corvette ZR1 and around seven seconds off the time of the Nissan GT-R.

The story behind the run started when the Viper Club of America got so pissed off at seeing its arch rival take the lap record, that the bugged the Dodge Street & Racing Technology team until they relented. The team then hired the ring for half a day on August 18th, shipped not one, but two Viper ACRs over to Germany and hired a pro WTCC driver Tom Coronel who has experience of racing in the 24 hours at Nurburgring.

Apart from a Racetech seat with a six-point harness, both of the ACRs used in the run were factory spec fitted with the Hard Core package. This package is popular amongst 10% of the Viper's customers, it sheds 40 pounds off the curb weight by removing a number of non-essential components such as the audio system, trunk carpet, rear cabin sound insulation, tire inflator kit, hood insulator, and steel battery cover.

Now comes the point of whether this lap record can be officially counted. The laps completed by the GT-R and ZR1 were reported to be in completely unmodified factory spec cars, however after early warm up lap times of 7:42 and a 7:35 some slight modifications were made. Colonel complained of some slight understeer on medium to high speed corners so the engineers stiffened the front and rear dampers.

The record run was a satisfactory conclusion for the team however there is belief this model could get well below the 7:20 mark.

When last were you this excited about a Chevrolet family sedan, apart from the semi-manic Lumina? Now after months of teasing we can finally reveal what the Chevrolet Cruze is all about as it debuts at the Paris Motor Show. Cruze is Chevy’s new mid-sized family sedan and its main point of existence is to elbow out the Toyota Corollas and Volkswagen Jettas of the world. A tough mission for anyone, ask anyone who has tried, but Chevrolet is super-confident in its offering. And for the first time they may actually have something to back this bravado in the Cruze.

The Cruze uses a design language that is becoming quite common lately, the one of a four-door fastback coupe sedan, similar to what we see in Mercedes-Benz CLS and Jaguar XF as quick examples. The Chevy “V” theme is carried from the grille in the exterior, right into the interior where it dominates the dashboard, but not to an irritating extent. Complementing it is the ambient ice blue LED background lighting system that gives it a warm, glowing feeling.

Three engines will be available, a 2.0-liter turbo diesel, a 1.6 and 1.8-liter gas choices. Respectively they produce 110kW and 320Nm, 82kW and 103kW. Chevrolet promises a more entry-level 92kW, 300Nm version of the turbo diesel. In addition to a 5-cog manual changer you get a 6-speed automatic, which is really welcome for this segment of the market.

ICE is taken care of courtesy of four and six-speaker sound system featuring MP3 playability, iPod input jack with a large hard drive for music storage. Completing the package is the DVD satellite navigation system with 7-inch map display and voice recognition function.

Sales begin in March 2009 and indications are that most targeted global markets will have the Cruze by the end of 2009.

We don’t often hear from Ssangyong, so it was with a slight glee that we picked up this sweet image of a concept vehicle from the South Koreans. Suggestions are a debut at the Paris Motor Show next month, and well after that perhaps next Rexton or Kyron? More likely a future Actyon if size is any measurement to go by. Who knows. This concept though has a 2.0-litre engine with 175hp.

Ssangyong really needs to excel now like its countrymen Kia and Hyundai. This means getting rid of old Mercedes-Benz engine technology and desisting naming their concepts after three-pointed-star products, like this one which is called the C200. Our image may not do it much justice but comparing this to a Kyron is like comparing Whoopi Goldberg to Cindy Crawford. So we’ll have to wait for Paris for a better view.

In similar fashion to the SL 65 AMG Black Series teaser photos, famous Mercedes-Benz tuner, Lorinser, has issued a teaser announcement for its tuning program for the new face-lifted SL-Class. Based on the SL 500, the new look SL will receive Lorinser's L 55 RS powerplant recently seen in the Lorinser CLS-Class with 460 hp (338 kW) and 585 Nm of torque compared to the standard 388 hp (285 kW) and 530 Nm. Lorinser will debut the 300 km/h (186 mph) SL-Class at the auto industry trade fair, Automechanika, in Frankfurt from September 16 – 21. Stay tuned.

  • Last week we showed you a very blurry picture of a mystery supercar on the set of the new Transformers movie, now a new picture has surfaced of the model giving us a much better idea of what it might be. Lets first state that despite the better quality of the shot there are no confirmations this is actually correct, but rumours state we are looking at a new Corvette Concept and possibly a design preview for the next generation scheduled to be launched in 2011.

The model sports a rounded body style we normally associate with the extravagant designs seen on concept models, clearly the headlights are too small for a production vehicle and that pointy nose looks reminiscent of the fighter jet styling of the Lamborghini Reventon.

It is still close to a year before the second instalment of the Transformers movie series is released, so we may need a bit patience before the true identity of the model is fully revealed.

    Press Release

    In Brief

        * Comeback of a sports car legend:
        * Third generation of the Scirocco to be launched
        * New Scirocco will be available across Europe by mid-November

Scirocco is the right choice as an affordable sports car for every day of the year

The countdown is running for the new era Scirocco: the third generation of the sports car will already be arriving on the market in August. Volkswagen is staging the comeback of a legend with the debut of the two-door car – Scirocco generations I and II wrote history as the most successful Volkswagen coupé of all time with about 800,000 units sold.

Cult status. In particular, it is the original Scirocco presented in 1974 that has long held cult status. Because, in contrast to many of its competitors of that time, the Scirocco – designed by Giorgio Giugiaro – was an affordable car with everyday utility, and front-wheel drive also made it a safe sports car for use every day of the year.

    Scirocco unites passion and logic

Fascination. The new Scirocco is extending this tradition. It offers pure driving pleasure, a new powerful design, high-end technologies such as DCC adaptive chassis control and the new 7-speed DSG dual clutch transmission. Plus: exclusive use of efficient turbo engines with up to 147 kW / 200 PS power, space for four adults despite its sporty lines, an extremely high level of safety and the everyday utility that is typical of every Volkswagen. This mix of passion and logic costs far less than one might guess based on the car’s key data.
New paths. Although the third generation of the Scirocco follows exactly the same positioning as the first one, Volkswagen very intentionally avoided retro elements. In this regard too, the Scirocco of the year 2008 is a conceptually counterpart to the original version: because in the mid-1970s the successor to the Karmann Ghia also set out on new paths, both technically and visually.

Front end design of a new era

High-sheen black headlamp housing. The third Scirocco is the first Volkswagen to sport the front end design of a new era. Especially characteristic here are the chrome lamp bodies and high-sheen black interior surfaces of the headlamp housings that are joined by the radiator grille cross bar that is also painted in high-sheen black.
Flawless sports car fundamentals. The VolkswageTwo crisply shifting dual clutch transmissionsn design team created a wagon-coupé based on flawless sports car fundamentals. This resulted in a side profile that had the potential to imbue this new Volkswagen too with a status that goes beyond class distinctions. Thanks to its long sweeping roofline and near-vertical rear window, it also frees up space for variability and up to 755 liters of cargo capacity.
Crisp dimensions. Other benchmark figures of the new sports car also speak a clear language. With its short overhangs, the Scirocco efficiently utilizes its 2,578 millimeter wheelbase to offer ample space. The Volkswagen is 1,404 millimeters tall, exactly 4,256 millimeters long and its width measures 1,810 millimeters.

Four turbo engines at market introduction

A lot of power for just a little fuel. One challenge in creating an affordable sports car involves the engines. On the one hand, they must absolutely be agile, yet it is also essential that they be economical and widely affordable. There are two approaches to resolving this apparent conflict Both of them have three letters: TDI and TSI – turbocharged diesel and gasoline direct injection engines.
One TDI and three TSIs. At the market introduction Volkswagen will offer the Scirocco with two TSI engines (118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS). Shortly thereafter, a TDI (common rail turbo-diesel, 103 kW / 140 PS) and another TSI (90 kW / 122 PS) will be added to the engine lineup. Decisive here is the fact that even the 122-PS base engine offers a maximum of torque at extremely low engine speeds (200 Newton-meter starting at 1,500 rpm). Its average fuel consumption of 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers shows considerable restraint.
5.4 to 7.7 liters fuel consumption. The combination of maximum torque and minimum consumption is a common theme running through the entire engine lineup. In the case of the latest TSI with 160 PS, 240 Newton-meter torque contrasts with just 6.5 liters super unleaded per 100 kilometers. And even on the 200-PS TSI with its considerable 280 Newton-meter of torque, fuel consumption is just 7.7 liters. As would be expected, the TDI also makes a brilliant showing here: 320 Newton-meter of powerful torque while being satisfied with just 5.4 liters of fuel. Incidentally, all engines up to 160 PS already satisfy the future Euro-5 emissions standard*.

Two crisply shifting dual clutch transmissions

6-speed and 7-speed DSG. Standard equipment on the Scirocco is the smoothly and precisely shifting 6-speed transmission. The DSG dual clutch transmission is offered as an option on the three engines starting at 140 PS. A 6-speed DSG is used with the TDI and the powerful 200 PS TSI. The 160-PS TSI distributes its power over an even broader range of gears with the 7-speed DSG.

Optional sport chassis with three level settings

Clever Chassis. Ideally tailored to the Scirocco is the new DCC adaptive chassis control system. Not only is the damper characteristic controlled here, but also tuning of the electro-mechanical power steering. Adaptive chassis control offers the three programs “Normal”, “Sport” and “Comfort”. Significant here is the fact that adaptive chassis control improves the driving characteristics of the Scirocco full-time. That is, the suspension is continually adapted to the roadway and driving situation. The system also reacts to accelerator, brake and steering inputs. It is able to resolve the conflict in goals between a tight sport suspension and a comfortable one.

    Standard features

Full program. The new Scirocco is one of the most attractive sports cars in terms of price. And yet its standard features place it on the same level as far more expensive coupés. Always on board are 17-inch alloy wheels, height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, leather steering wheel, parking brake handle and shifting lever grip, sport seats, split folding rear seatbacks, power windows, air conditioning, ESP, braking assistant, six airbags, power steering and of course a sport chassis. On the top 200 PS model, standard equipment also includes chrome tailpipes, a “Titanium black” roof liner and a sound generator.

    Panorama vent sunroof

Transparent roof. Supplying vast amounts of light to the interior is an optional large panorama vent sunroof that extends from the A-pillars to the B-pillars. At the press of the button the transparent roof opens up to 39 millimeters. When the sun is intense, a sunshade can be driven into place. But that is not likely to be necessary very often, since the glass of the panorama vent sunroof only transmits 8.2 percent of the UV radiation, 2.8 percent of the infrared radiation (heat) and 6.9 percent of the visible light.

Nissan takes the environmental issue very seriously, arguably more so than Bob Lutz personally, and is constantly pushing ahead with their Electric Vehicle (EV) range. Plans are that Japan and California will see the first pure electric cars, based on the Japanese Cube minicar, by 2010. This first wave will initially be sold to a test fleet market before retail customers can lay their hands on the Nissan EV. Last week at the Geneva Motor Show, two senior Nissan Execs talked to Automotive News and went into a few details. First of all that the Nissan EV will be based on the Nissan Cube (pictured) but may not necessarily be called that and will use an engine powered by a range of Lithium-Ion batteries developed by the new joint-venture between Nissan and NEC Corp. "The technology will first appear in a small vehicle," Masahiko Tabe, Nissan's manager of advanced vehicle engineering said. "The New York show will give you some hints." We will see a battery powered concept car at the upcoming motor show in New York that will hint to the styling and techonology of this EV. The new electric car should be good for 100 miles (commuters average 62 miles a day), a top speed of 75 mph and a full recharge should take about 8 hours. Source: Nissan

  • Every year there are always a few vehicles in development that gives you that little tingling feeling in your stomach - like you have just scored in a nightclub with someone well out of your league. Recent models that come to mind include the Audi R8, Nissan GT-R and Corvette ZR-1, but now we have new baby on its way in the form of the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series and we have a video of it burning rubber on the superb Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

The very hub of the latest sportcar to come from Mercedes is certainly found under the hood in AMGs 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 which has been tuned to get another 66hp bringing total output to 670hp, although some reports suggest this could be as high as 720hp. Possibly this could be considered going over the top in the German horsepower wars, but hey, we don't mind.

The performance aspect of the model doesn't stop there as the SL Black Series will get carbon fibre body panels and the folding hardtop will be dropped in favour of a fixed roof, both contributing to a greatly reduced weight of 1850kg.

We expect to see the unveiling of the model at the German Grand Prix in July with sales commencing early 2009, but get in quick – only 350 units are planned for production.

  • The unveiling of the BMW M1 Homage design study has really got the world talking, will the German manufacturer create a successor to the legendary M1 supercar? At the moment we are all left guessing the true intentions for the M1, but clearly the M1 Homage is a step in the right direction for a full production model. The attention the M1 Homage has been receiving has been immense that we saw it fit to post not, one, but two videos and just yesterday a very nice photoshop surfaced on the web courtesy of Dutch designer “H0SS “. Now we believe it is time for a trip down memory lane, the video above shows the original M1 supercar (street version) in the orange livery racing round the world famous Nurburgring - and we do mean “racing”, you will see hear what we mean in the video. Keep watching until the end for a short beauty footage clip and check out the additional high-res photos. Source: BMW
  • Earlier this week Dutch car magazine AutoWeek spilled the beans by publishing seven images of the all new Opel Insignia on their website but failed to supply official information. Today Opel released the official documents and images!

Opel is turning a page with the new Insignia, signalling a new era with an all new car, new name and a (although slightly) redesigned emblem, coinciding with Vauxhall's new emblem. The sedan and hatchback will make their public debuts at this summer's British International Motor Show in London.

GM Europe’s International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany is responsible for the design which stands out in a few ways. First the coupe-like roof line on the notchback, the new head and rearlights with Opel's new 'wing' signature and the 'blade' side contour. The new design cues continue inside with a dashboard that wraps from the instrument panel to the door, a new feature which will be applied to Opel's future models.

The headlights come with Opel's new AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) system, a system which allows the lights to automatically adjust its lighting in nine different ways according to the circumstances. They also feature LED daytime running lights, these LED lights use far less energy than regular lights and cut CO2 emissions from 6g/km to nearly zero.

The Opel Insignia will be available with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The AWD is fitted with the FlexRide mechatronic chassis system with its Adaptive Stability Technology, but is also optional for the FWD models. Seven engines will be offered at first, 4 petrol engines ranging from a 4-cylinder 115 hp unit to a 260 hp V6 and three new 2.0 liter direct-injection diesels ranging from 110 to 160 hp. A less environmentally taxing EcoFLEX version will be on offer subsequently.

“As each feature demonstrates, the Insignia is the result of our quest to develop a car that combines striking design, excellent driving dynamics and innovative technology” says Hans H. Demant, Managing Director, Adam Opel GmbH.

The Nissan GT-R can now lay claim to being one of the fastest production cars in the world after GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki completed the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany in just 7 minutes 29 seconds. According to our records, this puts the GT-R in second place for fastest laps by unmodified production cars just behind the Pagani Zonda F which posted a time of 7 minutes and 27 seconds last November. The time completely destroys the GT-R's previous best lap of 7 minutes 38 seconds achieved last year in slightly damp conditions.

Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R said “At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”

The world can now look forward to a response from the GT-R's main competitor, the Porsche 911 Turbo whose best time stands at a lowly 7 minutes and 40 seconds.

MG, now under ownership by Chinese manufacturer SAIC, have announced the production of the TF LE500 from August at the ex-MG Rover Longbridge plant in Birmingham. Having undergone a number of 'active quality improvements' as well as optimisation of parts, the new TF is part of a thought-out strategy to re-introduce the MG brand to the UK.

“The open top sportscar is an iconic image of British motoring and forms the basis of the MG marque’s long pedigree," says Gary Hagen, Director of Sales & Marketing. "The launch of the TF LE500 signals our determination to keep this class of car at the heart of the brand as we take it forward.”

And taking it forward is exactly what's on the books at the brand's facility in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Designers are currently planning a number of new MG models aimed at capturing the essence of the brand and taking it into new sectors, while rumours emerging from Auto Express suggest that an all-new TF model is in the pipeline, offering both convertible and coupe options for 2010. Also expected is a re-worked version of the Roewe 550 in a similar move to the old MG-Rover brand relationship.

The first deliveries to showrooms begin September, a moment inconcievable at the break-up of the British firm in 2005.

  • It’s all happening at Geneva as manufacturers are vying for centre stage. Big news for Nissan is the European launch of its luxury brand Infiniti. Trouble is, even though Nissan launched the GT-R to the global public at last years Tokyo motorshow, the car is still creating a stir wherever it goes and Nissan may run the risk of stealing the limelight from Infiniti on its GT-R European Geneva launch.

Today Nissan confirmed pricing and specifications for UK vehicles. £52,900 will get you into one of the fastest and most practical Supercars on the planet. £52,900 doesn’t sound much in isolation considering the cars performance but when you realise Nissan Japan charge somewhere in the region of £35,000 you have to question, why the huge jump? Nevertheless you can still out-race your Porsche 911 Turbo adversary to the bank to deposit the massive savings you will make over the German machine. There will be a three tiered range, the Standard car at £52,900, the GT-R premium edition at £54,200 and the GT-R Black edition topping of the range at £55,500.

The Premium Edition brings automatic headlamps and digital Bose® audio system. The Black Edition has exclusive Kuro black paint, gunmetal grey alloy wheels and black leather and Pearlsuede interior with red leather highlights. Nissan blames the delay in European launch (they don’t arrive until April 2009) on the build process being labour intensive, holding back global output to a 1000 vehicles per month.

As this is no ordinary Nissan, it will only be sold through ten select High Performance Centres throughout the UK. Complimentary collection and delivery service and a Unique Concierge Services Management programme will ensure the GT-R owner feels special.

Essentially the mechanical spec will remain unchanged so expect 480ps, 588Nm of torque, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a Vmax of 190+mph. See below for full specification.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK facelift has only been revealed a few months ago and Brabus, Mercedes tuner extra-ordinaire, has already made a customization program for the roadster. The program consists of aerodynamic enhancements, custom alloy wheels, suspension and of course a power upgrade.

The top of the range SLK 55 AMG is powered by Brabus' 6.1 liter engine (the stock 55 AMG engine is 5.5 liter, 360 hp and 510 Nm torque) and produces 445 hp (327 kW) with a peak torque of 635 Nm. the engine is hooked up to a seven-speed automatic gearbox and Brabus' self developed limited-slip differential. A zero to 100 km/h sprint should take no more than 4.3 seconds while the top speed is claimed to be 305 km/h.

The new aerodynamic parts have all been developed in the wind tunnel. The front spoiler reduces lift when driving high speeds the side rocker panels improve the airflow between the front and rear wheels. The rear receives a Brabus apron with boot spoiler and room for the four chrome tailpipes which betrays the presence of a Brabus stainless-steel sport exhaust system.

The German tuning house also offers suspension modifications like sport springs which lower the car by 30 mm. The center of gravity is therefor lowered and reduces body roll in fast corners, excellent in combination with sporty wide tires. Brabus offers several alloy wheels in sizes 17, 18 or 19 inch.

Extra horsepower needs extra stopping power, so Brabus fits six-piston aluminum fixed calipers and 355 mm vented and slotted discs in front and 300 mm discs with four-piston aluminum fixed calipers in the rear.

    2008-05-05 | Tag:Toyota

The Toyota iQ, an incarnation of lateral thinking, has made its world debut in production form at this week's Geneva Motor Show. Expressing the values of intelligence, innovation and not least of individuality, the iQ is born of a brief designed to quash the perception that 'small is basic', delivering a flexible and sophisticated interior space to the city car market, not sacrificing on urban mobility and environmental credentials.

'Quality' ingrained in its designation, the iQ is a 'J-Factor' product, a term used by Toyota to describe products designed with Japanese flair and uniqueness for international markets. Styled to signify dynamism and robustness, crease lines are prominent and features pronounced. The wheels placed in each corner, the iQ has a 'super stance', reinforced by its 16-inch alloy wheels and tough bumpers.

Small dimensions bear haven to the spacial refinement consumers want, the intelligent packaging the result of a re-think of the positioning, not just the size, of a number of components. In part thanks to the iQ's two-metre wheelbase, a clever interior space has been thought up, dubbed 'techno-organic'. Exemplified in the flowing central console, the concept is the fusion of 'geometric precision' with 'inner beauty'. Slim seatbacks contribute to the feeling of space, while flexibility is provided by way of cubby holes, under-seat storage and 50:50 split rear seats. A 3+1 seating arrangement suitable for three adults and a child or their luggage adds to the car's uniqueness.

Designed to meet voluntary Japanese manufacturer emissions standards of 140g/km of CO2 by 2009, the iQ is anticipated to weigh in at only 100g/km, combined with as yet unannounced high fuel efficiency figures. The iQ will start production late this year, hitting UK showrooms in 2009, and expected to shift 100,000 units worldwide in its first year.

  • KTM X-Bow GT4

    2008-04-23 | Tag:KTM Motorsport

Still popular one year after the curtain opened on the 237 horsepower KTM X-Bow, KTM has developed a GT4 version of their street-legal racer.  Reiter Engineering has partnered up with KTM to enter two X-Bow cars in this year's FIA GT4 European Cup.

Reiter, which runs Lamborghini teams in the GT1, GT2, and GT3, has entered the X-Bow in the Sport Lights class.  Instead of running their motorsports team themselves, KTM will work with Reiter to develop vehicles for the automaker's customer base.  By putting the car into racing conditions significantly more brutal than daily driving, KTM hopes to make continued improvements on their vehicle.

In addition to tuning the chassis for race conditions, the KTM X-Bow GT4 is fitted with more safety equipment to satisfy FIA requirements.  These include steel rollover bars, zylon fibre layers to prevent the driver from being impaled by a sharp object, and extended wheel covers.  KTM calls these enhancements "minor", pointing out that the KTM X-Bow is nearly race-ready as a stock car.

A personal favorite debut from last year the X-Bow seems a bit more stable and secure than the Ariel Atom.  Even though it is a little heavier, slower, and more expensive than the Ariel Atom, there is just something flat out appealing about the X-Bow.  Maybe because it looks a little more road-worthy than its British competitor.  Or maybe its the X-Bow's 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four engine from Audi that pushes the car from 0-100 kph in 3.9 seconds.

The public seems to agree.  Last September, about six months after its introduction, the KTM X-Bow will be manufactured in a plant dedicated to the car.  KTM had originally planned to build no more than 500 units per year, but demand necessitated a unique facility capable of producing 1,000 X-Bows per year.

Production of the showroom floor edition of the KTM X-Bow begins this summer.  The KTM X-Bow GT4 will race for the first time at Silverstone on April 20.

    Right sized crossover

The all new Dodge Journey is set to make it global debut at the upcoming 2007 Frankfurt International Motor Show this September. Dodge's latest model will be available early 2008 in the USA and mid 2008 in European showrooms. It is based on the global D-segment platform, like the new Avenger but measures in at 2890 mm (124 mm more than the Avenger) in order to accommodate the 5+2 seating arrangement.

Dodge is claiming to have the perfect solution for any family combining the functionality of a minivan, the capability of an SUV and the overall efficiency of a passenger car. “The all-new Dodge Journey gives our customers the entire package,” said Michael Manley. Of course Chrysler's Stow 'n Go system can be found in the crossover, making optimal use of the available space below seats.

Four engines will be available: a fuel efficient 2.4 liter four-cylinder World Engine (173 hp), an E85 capable Flexible Fuel Vehicle 2.7 liter V6 (186 hp), a 3.5 liter V6 with 6-speed automatic with AWD (235 hp) in North America, and a 2.0 liter turbo diesel (140 hp) for markets other than North America. The regular safety features like air-bags on all sides, ABS brakes and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) will be standard on the Journey, optional for the US is the back-up camera and AWD system.

We expect pricing to be announced closer to its showroom launch date.

Spacious Interior Room for the Entire Journey

A key target for the Dodge Journey’s design team was delivering a practical, flexible interior, with seating and innovative storage features typically only found in a minivan, and the final product delivers.

Dodge Journey’s two-box exterior design means more room for seating people and storing gear on the interior. Journey offers a choice of two seating configurations to balance buyers’ needs for passenger seating and cargo room. Five-passenger seating is standard on all models, while 5+2-passenger seating is available on all models. The Journey’s available third row gives passengers 2 inches (51 mm) more head room than leading North American competitors.

Storing things “under the front seat” takes on an entirely new meaning, thanks to Journey’s available Flip ’N Stow™ in-seat storage. The Journey’s front passenger seat cushion flips forward to reveal a large 10.75 x 8.75-inch (273 x 222 mm) bin under the seat cushion. The bin is large enough to store a purse, umbrella, planner or headphones with the seat down. The seat cushion is hinged, and when flipped forward, provides access to the storage bin.

Dodge Journey’s rear doors open 90 degrees, making it easier for people to get in and out of the second row and gain access to the available third-row seat.

In the second row, the all-new Dodge Journey features theater seating, which gives passengers in the second and third row the ability to see outside the vehicle, which is especially helpful for keeping kids entertained on long drives. The second row H-point is 1.6 inches (40 mm) higher than the first row. The available third row sits another .6 inches (17 mm) higher than the second row and 2.2 inches (57 mm) higher than the first-row seats.

Located in the floor behind the front-row seats are two standard in-floor storage bins that are designed to hold 12, 12-oz. (330 ml) cans plus ice or other items conveniently out of sight. For added convenience, the bins feature latching lids and removable, washable liners, so they’re a snap to clean.

Additional thoughtful features that make Dodge Journey more flexible for families include a child presenter seat on all models that makes it easy for the driver to attend to a small child seated in the second row when the vehicle is stationary. The child presenter seat works by allowing the 60 percent portion of the 60/40 fold-flat second row seat to travel 2 inches (51 mm) forward. With the front passenger seat folded flat, the driver can easily reach to the back to assist a child in the second row.

Dodge Journey is the first vehicle in the mid-size crossover segment to offer available integrated child booster seats. These available seats boost a child seated in the second row 4 inches (102 mm) so they’re seated in the adult belted zone. This makes it easier for the child seated in the booster seat to see outside the vehicle. The booster seat is designed for children who are as much as 4 foot 9 inches (1.45 m) tall and between 48 lbs. (22 kg) and 85 lbs. (39 kg).

The second-row seats also move forward and rearward a total of 4.7 inches (120 mm) to give adults more leg room, bring children closer to the front seats and provide more cargo room behind the seats. Folding the second row and the available fold-flat front passenger seat flat creates plenty of room for hauling home lumber needed to assemble a playscape or skis from the slopes.

On five-passenger models, a tri-fold load floor is located behind the second-row seat and provides a hidden storage compartment for added utility. The load floor is reversible and configures into a “grocery bag” position. The primary side of the folding panel is carpeted for durability.

The available third-row seat is easy to operate and get into, thanks to Journey’s stadium Tip ’N Slide™ second-row seats. With the turn of a single lever on the side of the seat back, the seat cushions easily fold upward and the seat slides forward. Journey’s available 50/50-split-folding third-row seat provides enough room for two passengers on an as needed basis. The seatback reclines 6 degrees to make the ride even more comfortable. A rear in-floor hidden storage bin located behind the available third-row seat is standard on 5+2-passenger vehicles.

In addition to seating and storage features, Dodge Journey’s versatile and functional interior features a two-tone color scheme with high-contrast dark and light colors. A combination of Dark Slate Gray and Medium Slate Gray is available on SE models. A two-tone combination of Dark Slate Gray and Light Graystone or Dark Pebble Beige and Light Pebble Beige is available on SXT and R/T models. A premium soft-skin instrument panel provides a sense of quality and craftsmanship. Chrome accents the upper center bin latch, door handle, shifter bezel and door lock knobs and instrument cluster bezel. Journey R/T models add chrome touches on radio and climate control knobs.

The 2009 model-year Dodge Journey also features three types of seat upholstery: cloth is standard on the SE model, YES Essentials® stain-resistant, odor-resistant, anti-static seat fabric is available on the SE model and standard on the SXT model and leather is standard on the R/T model.

Powertrains Provide Efficiency, Flexibility, Fun-to-drive Factor

The front-wheel-drive Dodge Journey features a four-wheel independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear suspension. Front and rear suspension crossmembers are isolated to the body to create a quiet ride, with less road noise, vibration and harshness. AWD is available on Dodge Journey models sold in the United States and Canada on vehicles equipped with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard.

Dodge Journey features several different engine/transaxle combinations designed to meet the needs of the diverse mid-size crossover buyer. These include a fuel-efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) 2.7-liter V-6 engine that can run on E-85, an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick for the United States and Canada and a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transaxle for markets outside North America.

Dodge Journey’s standard 2.4-liter World Engine provides an estimated fuel economy of 19 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 25 mpg on the highway (approximately 9 liters per 100 km on the European combined cycle), as well as solid, quiet performance. Journey’s 2.4-liter World Engine is coupled with a standard four-speed automatic transaxle in the United States and Canada, as well as a five-speed manual transaxle in most markets outside North America. It features dual variable valve timing, intake manifold flow control valves, acoustic cylinder head covers, dual counter-rotating balance shafts and an acoustic oil pan. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, this engine produces 173 horsepower (129 kW) and 166 lb.-ft. (225 N•m) of torque.

Dodge Journey also features an available 2.7-liter V-6 engine, coupled with a four-speed automatic transaxle that is offered as an FFV in North America. The flex-fuel engine produces 186 horsepower (138 kW) and 191 lb.-ft. (259 N•m) of torque and delivers an estimated 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway (approximately 10 liters per 100 km on the European combined cycle). The Journey’s 2.7-liter engine with flexible fuel capability has the ability to operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85. Outside North America, this 2.7-liter V-6 engine is coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle.

Dodge Journey R/T and R/T AWD vehicles available in the United States and Canada feature a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 232 lb.-ft. (315 N•m) of torque coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. This engine delivers an estimated 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. This 3.5-liter V-6 engine also is available on SXT models sold in the United States and Canada. The combination of the 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with the six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as quiet operation.

In markets outside North America, Dodge Journey offers a modern 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine available with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transaxle. This 16-valve diesel engine is a state-of-the-art direct-injection power plant with high-pressure fuel injection, a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder. The injectors are electronically controlled for high power and torque output and optimal fuel efficiency. Maximum power is 140 horsepower DIN (103 kW), and peak torque is 229 lb.-ft. (310 N•m). The engine is expected to deliver excellent overall performance and fuel economy of under 7 liters per 100 km (European combined cycle). A diesel particulate filter is standard from the factory.

Six-speed Transaxle Provides Quick Acceleration, Quiet Ride

The 2009 model-year Dodge Journey R/T and R/T AWD models available in the United States and Canada, as well as 2.7-liter models sold outside North America, feature a standard six-speed automatic transaxle, which provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of a numerically higher first-gear ratio. A more robust differential with increased torque capacity enhances launch performance by requiring less torque management, electronically limiting the torque that is available during the initial stages of standing-start acceleration. Smaller steps between ratios also make for a smoother, quieter ride, as the engine speed doesn’t change as much with each shift. In addition, more ratio choices, more appropriate ratios for quicker acceleration and a lower overall top gear ratio provide a quiet ride and improved fuel economy at highway speeds.

Dual-clutch Transaxle Technology Delivers Quick Acceleration, Refined Shift Quality and Improved Fuel Economy
The all-new Dodge Journey will be available with a new dual-clutch transaxle in markets outside of North America. This is the first application of this six-speed automatic transaxle, and it will be available with the 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine. It is expected to deliver a fuel economy improvement of as much as six percent compared with a conventional four-speed automatic transaxle.

Developed in partnership with Getrag, the new transaxle is equipped with two independent lay-shaft style gear sets with separate clutches, that use manual transaxle-based components. During shifts, the next gear is anticipated and pre-selected. One clutch is then opened while the other is closed, allowing shifting without torque interruption. The result is quicker acceleration, refined shift quality and improved fuel economy.

AWD Keeps All Four Wheels Planted

Dodge Journey SXT and R/T models sold in the United States and Canada equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine also offer AWD capability. Journey’s all-wheel-drive system works on demand, driving only the front wheels until power to the rear wheels is needed. AWD also is used on dry pavement between speeds of 25 and 65 mph (40-105 km/h) to enhance handling during performance driving. This system provides added traction on snow, ice and other low-traction surfaces without having to be switched on and off.

Engineered to a High Safety Standard

From its high-strength structure to its active safety systems, Dodge Journey is designed and engineered to keep its occupants safe and secure. Standard safety equipment includes:

    • Advanced Multi-stage Front Air Bags provide nearly instantaneous occupant protection by matching air bag output to crash severity
    • Low-risk Deployment Air Bags are included for smaller and out-of-position occupants
    • Front Seat-mounted Side Air Bags deploy for enhanced thorax protection during a side impact
    • Supplemental Side Air Bag Inflatable Curtains with Extended Up Time deploy down to provide all three rows vehicle occupant head protection during side impact
    • Structural Driver and Front Passenger Knee Bolsters control occupant kinematics and reduce leg loads
    • Available Child Booster Seats for children 4 foot 9 inches (1.45 m) tall and between 48 lbs. (22 kg) and 85 lbs. (39kg) raise the child into the adult belted zone
    • Anti-lock brakes (ABS) modulate the brakes for the driver to provide steering control while braking

While most of the carparazzi are freezing in the north of Scandinavia, Ford seizes the opportunity to do some testing on their new Ford Ka in Sourthern Europe. But fear not, the carparazzi are everywhere, resulting in the clearest photos yet of the new Ka, and without its buggley-eyes.

The new Ford Ka is based on the Fiat 500 frame and built in the same Polish factory as the Fiat 500. Yet there will be major differences between the two cars, firstly the Ford will be a lot more modern with Ford's new kinetic design already featured on the new S-Max and Mondeo.

Then again, there will also be plenty of similarities, like the engine choice. On top of the regular engines, Fiat has Abarth working on two high spec versions, the Abarth and Abarth SS, and we know that Ford will definately release an ST version and it stands to reason that there will also be a Ka RS.

    • Buick Returns Riviera Nameplate After Eight Years

    • "It's Not East, Not West ... It's Buick"

The Buick Riviera, a stunning concept car designed to showcase Buick's new global design direction, made its global debut today at Auto Shanghai 2007.

The gullwing Riviera concept coupe was developed with global design input by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in China, a design and engineering joint venture between General Motors and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC).

The Riviera was introduced today by Rick Wagoner, GM Chairman and CEO, and Hu Maoyuan, SAIC Chairman.

The Riviera has been engineered to accommodate a new hybrid system that will go into production at Shanghai GM, GM's flagship joint venture with SAIC, in 2008.

The fuel-efficient car, which will feature several technological and manufacturing advances, represents the latest achievement of GM and its partners in the promotion and development of alternative propulsion technologies in China.

According to Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design, "Developing and launching the Riviera in China underscores the diversity, strength and depth of the GM global design network. It also reflects PATAC's growing role within the GM Design family and China's significance as the world's largest Buick market."

The Riviera also marks the return of a renowned Buick nameplate after an eight-year hiatus, having sold more than 1.1 million units in the United States between 1963 and 1999.

The Buick Riviera, with its tightly stretched carbon fiber body panels, combination of positive and negative curves, strong front and rear identities and gullwing doors, captures the essence of Buick classics, Welburn said, while presenting a thoroughly 21st century design.

"The Riviera concept certainly lived up to the nameplate's reputation," Welburn said.

"We developed the Riviera to communicate the global design vocabulary of the Buick brand and set the stage for General Motors' design, engineering and manufacturing centers to work together on the next generation of Buick mid-size luxury cars."

According to James Shyr, PATAC Design Director, the Riviera's enticing curves and 'earth and water' interior tones are drawn from diverse inspirations including classic Buicks, ancient Chinese artifacts and modern electronic icons. The car, inside and out, communicates universal beauty - a look that transcends cultural or national boundaries.

"Designing this car made us realize how small the world could be. It's not East. It's not West. It's not the United States or China. It's Buick," Shyr said.

Exterior Design - A Sense Of Existence, Not Anonymity

To establish their design direction, PATAC designers looked in part to Buick icons such as the original Y-Job Concept of 1938, the 1960s Le Sabre, Electra 225 and the Riviera coupes of the 1960s and '70s.

The Riviera design is structured around the Buick tri-shield logo, sitting proudly on a trihedral waterfall grille which is formed by three meeting planes. This takes the traditional Buick treatment to a new level of sophisticated boldness.

The Buick logo leads into a reflective strip through the hood, a mark of respect to the distinctive mid-hood crease prevalent in classic Buicks. Elongated LED headlamps flow up the hood sides to three-section, top-mounted chrome portholes as a single piece of jewelry.

The logo, hood strip, headlamps, side mirrors and rocker covers all have 'icy green' backlighting available at night, matched by backlit logo and exhausts at the rear.

Designers have cleverly incorporated several other design signatures from the original Riviera generation. They include the "double sweep spear" line along the bodyside and the flared tail design.

"This car was inspired by great Buicks - their grace, their gesture. This car was designed to achieve a sense of existence. It's not an anonymous car when it drives past you but it's not completely in your face either. We wanted to create something which would make you want to run your hand across it rather than just look at it," Shyr said.

In this theme, the 'Shell Blue' exterior color was chosen to elicit the right level of attention. The color is a metallic silver with light blue accents, perfectly highlighting the coupe's exterior curves.

The gullwing doors, selected for their exotic appeal, achieve an expansive entrance to the two-plus-two seating configuration. Measuring 1938 millimeters at their widest point, they add to the coupe's sleek sideline. At night, fully opened doors gently shine the "Buick" name on the ground.

The use of carbon fiber in all body panels allowed the designers greater flexibility through reduced mass and added strength. This made the gullwing engineering demands easier to realize and sharp, tight radius curves possible across the body surface.

The Riviera sits on 21-inch 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels, combining polished and satin finishes, with low-profile tires. Taking their cue from Formula One cars, the side mirrors are sweeping yet unobtrusive.

PATAC designed the Buick Riviera to accommodate the new hybrid system, which will be introduced in China in 2008 prior to the Beijing Olympics. The new hybrid system fits naturally with the Riviera's 'earth and water' design theme.

Interior Design - All About Relaxation

In a word - sanctuary. The use of rich blue and subtle creams, representing earth and water themes, are conveyed through high-quality leather bucket seats, plush carpet and a luxurious padded steering wheel. Completing the organic feel, the roof comprises two shaded glass windows offering increased headroom and a celestial connection for occupants.

"We had to have the driver feel relaxed and tranquil inside the car. We used earth and water tones and avoided hard, aggressive edges," Shyr said.

The interior has no discernable start and finish point for the front and sides, creating a comfortable lounge feel. It is immediately futuristic yet somehow familiar.

The three-dimensional speedometer, inspired by past classics but utterly modern in design, compliments the touchpad styled central console loosely modeled on a computer mouse. An LCD display screen crowns the central console.

Interior designers were encouraged to consider people's personal belongings to enhance their feeling of familiarity and comfort in the vehicle. Continuing the theme of calm simplicity, electronic shifter pads replace the traditional transmission shifter. Controls are kept to a minimum to avoid driver distraction.

Ambient light strips are applied from across the console and inserted on the door liner, stretching to the front seats. Deliberately imitating precious Chinese jade stone, the lights are tinted a subtle icy green, which also offers tribute to a favored color of Buicks in days gone by.

Interior trim treatments befitting the Buick prestige abound - miniature aluminum tri-shields in the front seat headrests, a wooden floor mat in the rear and a rear central armrest which can move sideways left and right to accommodate passengers of different sizes.

Royal blue Alcantara, a soft plush covering, was chosen for the door, console and roof while sandy white leather covers the lower door, lower console and seats.

    Ancient Influences In Modern Design

The design team set out to create a modern global design - not something which could be superficially described as a Chinese car. At the same time, they sought to draw from their heritage outside the automotive industry from classic shapes, concepts and artifacts. They wanted to include a subtle Chinese essence and influence if one looked deeply enough.

A strong influence was the yuanbao, a small curvaceous gold or silver ingot used in ancient China as currency and popular today as a symbol of ancient Chinese prosperity.

"This design was about the East and the West co-existing in harmony. We always wanted to make a global car, to take a sense of the Buick DNA and create something for the world," Shyr said.

"It is so wonderful that our designers can take some of the rich culture behind them and make it international. East, West, Buick, China - there's no missing piece in the puzzle in here. Riviera has captured the essence of Buick - grace, gesture, form and emotion."

  • Spring is in the air for those that dwell in the northern hemisphere and with spring comes dry, warm sunny weather. Most classic car enthusiasts will already be preparing their beloved machines for the new season ahead. Generally, valuable classic cars are taken out of commission during the cold winter months to preserve the mechanicals and the body work from corrosion and deterioration.

Heightened activity in classic cars means an equal gain in activity for classic car event organisers as the next 6 months is their peak season. One of the first major events is the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este to be held near Lake Como.

More than fifty exotic pieces of machinery will be brought out into the spring sunlight from various marques. Vehicles such as the 1967 Pininfarina Dino 206 Competizione from Ferrari, a 1938 540 K Autobahnkurier from Mercedes (one of only two ever made) and the 1950 Mille Miglia winning Ferrari 166 MM Touring Berlinetta will make an appearance. The calibre of vehicles is extremely high which makes it even more of an honour that this event is to be BMW’s showcase for celebrating the 30th birthday of it’s iconic M1 sportscar.

The M1 was BMW’s answer to the all conquering Porsche 935 which was dominating the Group 5 series back in 1976. Essentially the M1 was a homologation special, the rules of which dictated that BMW would have to build 400 vehicles over a two year period to qualify. During the gestation period, the BMW M1’s design flirted with Lamborghini chassis builders before financial difficulties at the Italian automaker forced BMW to bring much of the work back in house. Guigiaro’s Ital design came up with the M1’s timeless shape. BMW’s M88 3.5L twin cam 24 valve straight 6 churned out an impressive 277hp from its mid engined position which gave the M1 huge cross- continental potential with 160+mph performance available.

The ironic twist in the M1’s tale is that homologation rules deemed that all 400 vehicles be built and sold to the public before it could race in the group 5 category, something BMW never achieved until 1981. By this time the game had moved on and BMW’s M1 was outclassed by more modern machinery.

Nevertheless this vehicle is still an icon for the Bavarian brand and was the first of many “M” vehicles to grace our roads and thirty years on it still cuts a distinctive edge amongst the more modern pack of supercars.

The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este will held over the weekend of the 25th to 27th of April.

  • Well, that was one of the most short lived teasers of recent memory. CarTribe.co.uk has busted the nut open just one day after we posted our smart teaser article. According to CarTribe, Caterham recently had a viewing of the vehicle and some press materials were made available.

Far from the rumored 2.4 liter superharged RS Performance V8 engine, the R500 will receive a reworked 2.0-liter Duratec Ford engine which pumps out 263bhp and revs to 8,500 rpm. Standard is a 6 speed manual transmission but as an option a Quaife 6 speed sequential transmission is available plus launch control. Unfortunately, no weight figures have been given, yet.  Where's my calculator...

On the outside the R500 Superlight to non-afficionados looks exactly like every other Caterham, however, for those in the know, the R500 gets the CSR nose, aero wishbones, 13-inch anthracite wheels and clear lens tailamps.

The R500 Superlight costs a tear jerking £37,000 but teletransports itself to 60mph in under than 3 seconds!?!  For supercar thrill seekers, that's a bargain...

Good and bad news coming out for the Tesla camp in San Carlos, California.  The company, which has a highly anticipated all-electric sports car coming to the market this year, was granted a waiver by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on a key airbag issue that could have stalled production, and possibly bankrupted the company.

According to the Associated Press, the NHTSA decided yesterday that the automaker had gone to great lenths to comply with a mandate forcing car companies to install advanced airbags on all new models.  The stepped-up safety measure uses airbags that release with an adjusted amount of force, depending on the impact of each individual crash.  This news comes on the heels of the Tesla Roadster's passing grade in U.S crash testing.

Citing the company's desire to also bring a fully electric sedan to market by 2010, and Tesla's $43 million operating losses from 2003-2006, the NHTSA granted a three-year exemption on the advanced air bag rule to Tesla.  The $98,000 Tesla Roadster will still have standard airbags.

Of course, this would all be fair and good if the first production Tesla had made it to San Carlos in the first place.  Greentech Media is reporting that the first real Tesla Roadster was trucked to Amsterdam presumably from the Hethel Engineering Centre in Norfolk, England.  The car was supposed to be loaded on a plane, with arrival at company headquarters happening sometime today.

Sadly, the car missed its flight at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, and should now reach San Carlos sometime later this week.

Despite reports of transmission problems with the Roadster, the first edition of the car should begin building on March 17.  The Series One Hundred edition of the Tesla Roadster sold out thanks to pre-orders taken in 2006 pre-order.  The company plans on building a total of 625 Roadsters in 2008, and 800 each year through 2010.
